I was surprised by the sheer amount in the question bank: geographical terms, engine and sail maintenance, navigation, safety, first aid, getting off a grounding, turning in a current, and much more.
Unfortunately, although IYT and RYA require all this too, they don’t test it as strictly or cover it in such detail. The exam gives you 30 questions picked at random from thousands, with one mistake allowed. Preparation is hard. Mikhail Bazhin’s ‘GIMS Exam’ app helped (http://test-apps.ru). It has the theory, the questions, and even a link from each question to the relevant section of theory.
In the end, I qualified to operate a motorboat on internal waters and inland waterways. I clearly wouldn’t have time to prepare for the coastal waters category, and all the sailing exam slots were taken.
