On 24 March, I also attempted the SRC and UBI radio exams…

That same day, 24 March, I attempted two more exams: SRC VHF GMDSS for marine radio and UBI/FM for inland waterways. About €130 each. They have three parts.

1. A 24-question test: frequencies, message types, acronyms, legislation and GMDSS equipment.

2. Listening and translation. The examiner reads a passage aloud in English, which you then translate into German. On the second page is a German passage to translate into English. The two are similar.

3. Practical. Switching on and setting up the radio; sending, relaying, acknowledging, cancelling and ending distress traffic; and routine calls.

I didn’t pass the practical first time. In two attempts at ending distress traffic, I omitted the time the distress began, though that isn’t in the RYA textbooks. On 28 April, I nearly failed again by saying MAYDAY RECEIVED instead of RECEIVED MAYDAY and giving the call sign together with the MMSI.

Two weeks later, a letter arrived with my radio operator’s certificate.
