Exactly a month later, on 24 March, came the SBF Binnen exam…

Exactly a month later, on 24 March, I was due to take the SBF Binnen exam for operating small craft on inland waters.

Robert gave me a one-hour private lesson on the differences between inland and sea rules, then wished me luck. This exam is easier than the sea one: no navigation problems, and the SBF See practical counts towards it.

Preparation meant putting all the questions into Anki again and answering them every evening until I knew them by heart. One useful aspect was the number of questions about transiting the Kiel Canal, or NOK. The formula mg + V + D = rw — compass course plus easterly variation plus deviation equals true course — is now firmly lodged in my memory. Surprisingly, the bare formula stuck better than the Russian mnemonic KOZa: ‘Compass, subtract west’.

On the day, I answered every question in 15 minutes rather than the hour I’d expected. A week later, a letter from Berlin arrived in my postbox with my licence.
