In January, I wrote to every sailing school in Kiel: ‘What can I do if I need an SBF licence but don’t speak German?’ One sent me a link to a school in Hamburg: https://www.yachtschule-eichler.de/Sportbootfuehrerschein-Hamburg.php Possibly the only one where you can take the exam in English.

The school’s owner, Robert, was kind and welcoming. He always made time to explain things properly.

I paid €20 for the printed exam papers — 15 tests of 39 questions and navigation problems, with charts — €60 for their translation, €30 for a half-hour lecture, €40 for the medical, and €177.54 for the sea and inland exams and licences. I also had two 90-minute practical sessions, on the afternoon of 23 February and the morning of the 24th.

The SBF See exam took place at 4pm on 24 February.

The practical covered holding a course, turning in the boat’s own length, man overboard, berthing, using a bearing compass, and nine nautical knots. I’d memorised the theory by putting every question into Anki and doing chart exercises every evening.

Passed without a mistake.
