I’d wanted a break from sailing. But on Saturday evening, Igor called: for day two of the third Federation Cup round, nobody was coming except Rada, on only her fourth outing. So I ended up in another regatta, almost double-handed.
If I had to describe the race in one word, it would be ‘experimental’. We were among the leaders. When it came to hoisting the spinnaker, the guy came free of the pole four times in a row. We ended up goosewinging, holding the sails out, but lost seven boat lengths to our rivals.
On the second lap, we tightened the mainsheet to flatten the sail. Just 1.5cm was enough for our rivals to start overtaking us upwind, when previously we’d been overtaking them. Clear proof that a sail needs some belly in light airs.
With the pole out of action — and it isn’t a #racing without a spinnaker — we hoisted it without the pole and controlled it with the guys. Difficult, but beautiful, and we lost less speed.
Towards the end, the jib furler died, so we had to furl it by hand.
