August was packed with sailing. I thought there was nothing left to surprise me. But #silavetra decided to mark the start of autumn with ‘Neon Racing’ on SV20s in Strogino on 2 September.
Judging by the board behind the administrator, the #racing was going to be busy. Six boats! I ran into Alexei, with whom I’d learnt to sail a Luch dinghy, and waited for Sasha, our instructor for the evening.
In the end, there isn’t much to say. I had two inexperienced crewmates. One was given the tiller, the other the mainsheet. I worked the jib and kicker. I even tried hoisting the gennaker, but it was twisted.
We didn’t complete any of the three courses. We rounded a mark only twice. The lads were afraid of heeling, eased the mainsheet, and couldn’t hold a course. No neon either, unless you count handheld torches lighting up the sails. I’d hoped to race for a place, any place, but it wasn’t to be. Even afterwards, the crew dispersed without staying for the party.
On the plus side, it was my first experience of night sailing.
