Anki really helped me build my vocabulary. But whenever I read, one question kept going round in my head: ‘How do you pronounce that?’
Take yacht. My inner voice tried every combination of Russian consonants it could think of. Imagine my surprise when I learnt how it actually sounded. There were plenty more like it: I hadn’t the faintest idea how to pronounce halyard, the rope used to hoist a sail.
There’s a free service, https://youglish.com, which finds YouTube videos in which a particular word is spoken. Brilliant for learning languages, or just finding things to watch.
I also bought the ‘Sailing English’ audio course from the RYA school Kabestan: http://online.kabestan.ru/sailing-english/. It contains everyday phrases. You can listen in the background, repeat them yourself, or write them down as dictation. So far, I’m pleased with it.
