On Tuesday, 14 November 2023, an email arrived from DavidWerft with a photo of mould aboard. They’d found it during the work and recommended taking the sails somewhere warm. Only two weeks had passed since the lift-out . The moisture absorbers were still at home.
I hurriedly asked colleagues whether anyone could help take the sails and mattresses home. I also packed a bag with a Chinese digital thermometer/hygrometer and Yachticon Mould Remover.
On Saturday morning, 18 November, we went to the marina. Dima helped load mattresses, towels, sleeping bags and sails into his car while I treated the white fuzz. The wood round the galley had suffered most. I didn’t want to keep him waiting, so I skipped charging the batteries, though ideally they should get a charge about once a month.
On 2 December, I returned to charge the batteries and check the mould. Good news: the areas I’d treated were clean. But a little fresh growth had appeared on the deckhead. The trip was complicated by Europe’s heaviest snow cover since 2010. At least I now have lovely photographs of the marina in snow.
