Charter and cruise

2 October 2023.

2 October 2023. A day at sea, and a good chance to explore the ship.

Breakfast seven to ten, hot dogs on the open deck noon to one, lunch one to three, dinner six to nine. The food barely varied between meals. Eating nothing but steaks is fun at first, but after a couple of days a different soup becomes exciting. Overall, the holiday seemed aimed at drinkers who’d bought the unlimited bar package. It pays for itself above six drinks a day. There are about five bars, including a smoking bar. Everything costs extra. No shortage of customers.

On deck ten, I found a gym with treadmills and a few machines, plus an activities timetable. Every day, seven in the morning to nine at night, without a break: exercises, yoga, stretching, spin classes and more.

Deck eleven has an enclosed spa with several heated hot tubs. Access costs an extra €250. Quite popular, apparently: we kept meeting people in bathrobes. There are hot tubs on the open deck too, permanently packed with children like sardines.

The ship’s centre has a three-storey atrium theatre hosting guitar performances, pop and rock concerts, acrobatics, bingo, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, light-hearted talks about Norway and our ports of call, and interviews with crew members. A leaflet with the next day’s full programme appeared at our door at seven each evening. A pity it was all in German.
