I already have a channel for recording sailing experience. But most stories contain more than a few paragraphs. Hull painting took two months. Cockpit sole, a month. Every outing needs preparation rarely seen in the finished text.
Other memorable episodes don’t warrant a full post. For example, spilt vinegar on the morning bus, and trying to explain to myself why launch preparations needed it. Or almost becoming a two-yacht owner.
I’ve also watched other channels more. Nikita at @whaleflysails posts tracks and photos. During Silverrudder, Grigory shared short videos almost hourly. Simply enjoyable to watch. Content needn’t always be useful; sometimes the unedited process, without conclusions, is enough.
Where is the line between experience and recording it?
I tried a second channel, live in format. About a month in, it takes pressure away. Stories can unfold without immediately becoming finished prose.
Once an episode ends, I return here, gather the material and make a complete post. An unfinished board or bird by the pontoon now has somewhere separate.
The channel is called Deelstuff: Live — @deelstuff_live.
A wasp story
For variety, something that’s sat in drafts for two years.
Simple job: making day shapes while sorting out the cockpit.
At first, I ignored a wasp entering the engine vent. Repeated visits suggested construction inside.
A straightforward assumption: leave it, and soon it won’t be one visitor.
When it flew away, I masked the hole. Seemed sufficient.
Reality differed. It returned, hovered at the entrance and checked the surroundings, flying round the sole, returning to the tape as if verifying coordinates. Working became impossible.
Time to admit the conflict had begun.
I judged distance and opponent size: large enough to allow no mistakes. A mat nearby, quick plan. Waited for it to hover, covered it and pressed.
I didn’t lift the mat immediately. The aim was one decisive intervention.
Motionless, no visible damage. I spooned it overboard. Inside, a plum-sized nest, partly removed.
That evening, ordered a new vent grille.
The day shapes still work and occasionally appear in post photos.
