After sailing from Dolgoprudny to the Pestovo Reservoir, we had a little practice: hoisted and repacked the spinnaker, made a couple of turns. The committee boat was flying the ‘carrot’ pennant: start postponed.
We spent several hours circling with the other competitors. Out came the cold cuts, pickled cucumbers, tomatoes, bread, nuts and firewater. Dmitry had plenty of stories about travelling, his yachts being hired for filming, good deals, and, of course, yacht repairs. One stuck with me: an old sail had been spray-painted purple for a TV series, freshening it up and improving its shape. He’d won several regattas with it, and joked that everything was purple to him now — Russian slang for not giving a damn.
Back at the marina, he showed us round his workshop. The race never started.
