Repair and maintenance

While the gelcoat cured, I turned to the stern-tube seal. It keeps water out where the propeller shaft enters the hull.

The usual maintenance involves applying grease to the shaft and pushing it under the seal with a special rounded attachment. I’m lucky: I have a brass greaser that forces grease through a connection straight into the seal.

8 June 2024. I found diagrams of the greaser online, undid it with a 22mm spanner, removed the old grease and backed the pressure plate right off. Filled it with fresh grease using a spoon, about 150g. Reassembled and began screwing the piston in to fill the feed line. It went in almost two centimetres.

After a couple of outings, I can say no water is entering the bilge any more. Previously, a trip could leave a couple of cups in there.
