Windex, a leaking mast and a Wallas heater repair

Sometimes it feels as though the boat jobs will never end. But I seem to have finished almost everything I’d planned.

First, I tried adjusting the Windex and finding where rain entered the mast. I used the neighbouring marina’s mast crane for €15, with its large, convenient ladder. All I got were a couple of nice photos and the discovery of a hole I couldn’t reach. I did enjoy berthing with the bow line already led back to the cockpit.

The yard team came over and offered help. We used our own crane to lift one of them to the masthead. He filled the hole with Sikaflex and held the wind vane pointing over the bow while we followed the instructions, shorting two contacts with a blade to calibrate it.

The last problem was the Wallas heater, which leaked paraffin in heating mode. I reached an area with a large red gasket, but wasn’t sure it was the culprit. I emailed a photo to distributors in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Germany, translating the text with deepl.com. They all agreed I’d found the right place: the old gasket apparently no longer held fuel back, and the discontinued model had no replacement available. That was enough for me. I coated both sides of the gasket with liquid fuel-resistant sealant, reassembled the heater and tested it. Leak gone.
