I opened my 2022 sailing season in a Laser dinghy. They say it’s the only way to become a good helm. That appealed to me. Six hours with a coach at Sila Vetra cost 9,500 roubles.
I’ll say straight away that I overestimated my fitness. I thought I’d be leisurely tacking about. Instead, I rigged the boat from scratch, stepping the mast and fitting the running rigging. The boom hit me in the temple more times than I could count before I learnt to sit properly. Worst of all, I capsized three times.
To right the boat, I hung my weight off the daggerboard from the water, then hauled myself aboard using the rigging. The first time, I managed. By the third, I couldn’t even lift my arms out of the water. I had to swim the boat ashore. Even then, trying to jump aboard from the shallows, I cramped a calf muscle and fell back into the water beside her.
I can’t describe how frightened I was sailing the Laser back upwind, or how grateful I am to my coach Tikhon for his patience and understanding.
