At the start of summer, an Instagram advert caught my eye: ‘Sailing Basics’ with Sila >>> Vetra. It wasn’t the first time I’d seen them: their ads were everywhere on Instagram. Six weekend sessions cost me 20,000 roubles, and on 3 July I arrived by taxi at 9.30am at the Beryozki yacht club in Povedniki, near Mytishchi.
The first session was a lecture. We were given a notebook, pen, sailing book and a one-metre length of rope for practising knots. Instead of three hours, the lecture ran for five. It was rather muddled: the instructor wanted to give us as much information as possible and went into tiny details, such as what the jib sheet car does. There was plenty of distracting noise. Next door, MoreSail were running a large regatta to music straight out of my 2007; building work was going on at the yacht club; and aircraft kept flying overhead to and from Sheremetyevo. My head was a jumble. The practical break helped: we learnt the basic knots and how to coil a rope.
