Repair and maintenance

After lifting out, the yacht needs winterising.

After lifting out, the yacht needs winterising. Here’s the jobs list:
1. Fill the diesel tank to the brim, leaving no air space for condensation. Add a biocide. Some people advise the opposite: empty the tank completely and drain off the water in spring.
2. Disconnect the engine cooling-water intake hose, flush with fresh water, then run antifreeze through. Leave it in the hoses until spring.
3. Dry the freshwater pumps and hoses.
4. Change the oil filter and the oil in the engine and gearbox.
5. Change the fuel filter.
6. Replace the impeller, alternator belt and shaft seal if needed, or after 200 engine hours. The impeller draws in seawater for cooling; the belt drives the alternator; the seal sits on the shaft ahead of the propeller to keep water out.
7. Replace the sacrificial shaft anode.
8. Put moisture absorbers below.
(Hopefully, I haven’t forgotten anything.)

I did the first job myself. For the eighth, I bought special bags of desiccant salts, but decided to bring them down in a couple of weeks. I left the rest to the marina team. Let professionals do the first service — especially as I hadn’t even managed to undo the fuel filter myself in summer. They had a dedicated job form, but haven’t invoiced me yet. I’ll update the post when I know the cost.
