Two days later, on Friday 3 November 2023, I was back aboard Rassvet. This time for the winter lift-out.

There wasn’t a strict order, at least on paper. Boats were lifted one after another, and the harbourmaster gave owners about half an hour’s notice. When my turn approached, I warmed the engine and slowly prepared to leave. It was pleasing to realise I could now do this alone without difficulty, even gracefully at times. Yet only in spring, on our first day, Lyosha and I had spent about an hour berthing .

A large square frame hung from the crane, with two slings dangling beneath it. These were passed under the yacht. A marina employee asked where the propeller was, to avoid catching it. I showed photographs from the previous lift and indicated where Dima and I had dived to inspect the propeller. For the lift itself, I prepared two long mooring lines for the staff to control her angle.

Once the keel touched the ground, they pressure-washed the hull. Hardly any barnacles had appeared since the last clean. Then the harbourmaster used a tractor to position a special cradle beneath the boat and take her into the shed. Crane work cost €321.30 plus €58.31 per tonne. The displacement of my Ohlson 29 is 3.1 tonnes.
