Charter and cruise

7 October 2023.

7 October 2023. I woke unexpectedly at six to heavy rolling. That shouldn’t have happened: the forecast had the wind down to ten knots by then. I went onto the balcony. A light following wind raised only a small chop. Yet huge, long waves, a couple of metres high and stretching to the horizon, came towards us against the wind, one after another. Mesmerising.

This is swell. The five- to six-metre waves generated by a storm don’t vanish instantly; they keep travelling for hundreds of kilometres. I’d never seen just how large they could be. We rolled for several more hours.

Today’s bingo in the atrium theatre had a €6,000 prize: the first person to match ten numbers within the first forty calls would win. Nobody did. Then came an ABBA show and a competition for the best Instagram photo using the ship’s hashtag.

In between, I watched people wander aimlessly like zombies, swaying with boredom. Probably those in windowless inside cabins or cabins with only a porthole. A cruise is one holiday where it’s worth paying a little more for a balcony.

There really isn’t much to do: eat, sleep, watch the sea, shower, read a book, play solitaire on your phone. The complete gentleman’s entertainment package.

At seven on 8 October, after 383 nautical miles from Oslo and 1,207 in total, we returned to Kiel. One final breakfast, bags collected, down to deck five for our passports, and ashore. Holiday over.
