5 October 2023. After another 173 nautical miles, we were in Norway’s capital by eight. Architecturally, Oslo reminded me of Moscow: modernism, brutalism, a sort of Luzhkov-era neoclassicism, and original classicism.
Ashore, we passed through the beautiful opera house and entered the Munch Museum. Despite its thirteen storeys, the artist’s works occupied only three rooms. His best-known versions of The Scream and Madonna weren’t even in the building.
Next, the National Museum of Art. The exterior alone is a work of art. Inside, rooms cover everything from ancient Japanese artefacts to the design of Norway’s passport. We found Munch’s The Scream there too.
During the day, a text arrived: the passage to Aarhus was cancelled, and we’d stay another day in Oslo. Back aboard after dinner, we went to the captain’s weather talk in the atrium theatre. Tomorrow’s forecast was for gusts over 60 knots and five- to six-metre waves: Beaufort force 11. The ship could handle it, but most passengers would have found it uncomfortable, with more adventure than they wanted.
