A colleague has a private pilot’s licence. He also belongs to a club with a small airfield and two aircraft. Over lunch, we sometimes discuss the differences between marine and aviation radio and navigation. During one conversation, I invited myself along for a flight. He agreed, suggesting we split the costs.

After work on Monday, 11 September, we went to his club. The ‘airport’ was a field with a hangar, diesel pump, a little building with an amateur radio station, and tables round a barbecue. Our aircraft weighed only 200kg; one person could push it easily. Its aluminium frame was covered with something like heavy fabric. Maximum lifting capacity: 250kg.

During the flight, Simon explained every action and manoeuvre and enthusiastically pointed out local sights. Despite the aircraft’s fragile construction, the flight was even smoother than a commercial one. At 2,000 feet — about 700 metres — we followed the Schlei to the Baltic, looking down on little sailing yachts and charming red-brick German towns. Our speed was around 220 knots.

Beautiful. But for now, I still prefer sea voyages. Thirty-five minutes of pleasure cost me €40.
