A week later, on 9 September, the weather took a turn for the worse. Heat and flat calm. So I invited colleagues to spend the day at anchor and learn to steer with a tiller.
A peaceful day of conversation, drinks and all sorts of snacks. I enjoyed how the yacht glided along, easily making five knots. Anchoring no longer troubled me: drop it from the stern, then secure the warp at the bow cleat. Simple and tidy. The portable fridge ran all day, cooling our drinks. A pleasant effect: the hotter we got in the sun, the colder they became.
After berthing, I saw that the battery voltage indicated nearly half the charge was gone. That couldn’t be right. Fitting the battery that arrived at 11.6V had probably been a mistake.
