Insurance

As soon as you buy a yacht, there are three things to sort out:
– preparing for the delivery passage
– insurance
– a berth

At IKEA, Biltema and local chandleries, I bought a first-aid kit, two automatic lifejackets, a safety harness and tether to clip on to the boat, an electric kettle, a whistling kettle, alcohol fuel for the stove, plastic crockery, spare mooring lines and fenders, a sea anchor, three diesel cans and all sorts of small things. Around €1,000 in total. I regret not buying the €50 rail-mounted anchor roller and another couple of mooring lines: prices in Germany are three times higher.

Insurance is needed to get a marina berth and protect against your own mistakes. If I accidentally put a hole in someone else’s boat or a pier, I could be paying for decades. I Googled Segelbootversicherung and followed the first link to https://pantaenius.com. They needed only the yacht model, build year, engine manufacturer, installation year and serial number, plus whether the rigging had been renewed in the last ten years. Hull cover for €10,000, with an €800 excess, cost €197 a year. Third-party liability cover of €10 million cost €75; personal accident cover, €74. Total: €347 a year. It covers the North Atlantic, Norwegian Sea, North Sea and Baltic, excluding Russian waters.

The hardest part was finding a berth. Visitor berths were an option, but at €18 a night. I opened Google Maps in satellite view and worked along Germany’s east coast from Flensburg to Rostock, visiting the website of every marina and yacht club I spotted. I sent my prepared enquiry more than a hundred times. Around 70 refusals came back, but also three offers. One was in a village 20km from Flensburg, three hours away. Another was in Schleswig, €800 a season but 25 miles from the sea. The third was the Lübeck marina where I’d viewed the Najade 900, at €1,200 a season. Easier to reach from Kiel, a lovely town, interesting sailing waters, and closer to Sweden. An obvious choice.

Late on Sunday evening, 14 May 2023, my colleague Lyosha arrived. Not Alexei @AlexMemfis, who’d helped me choose the yacht. Lyosha had volunteered for the delivery passage. It would be his very first sailing experience.
