Between looking for a yacht and getting qualified, a colleague asked me to help launch his boat and step the mast. Bursting with curiosity, I gladly agreed.
12 April 2023. Saturday. Ten in the morning. A Hanse 312 stood on supports near Kiel’s Olympic sailing centre. We climbed aboard by a wooden ladder, waited our turn and watched the work. The crane operator lifted yacht after yacht into the water. Around noon, someone wheeled over the lifting slings and told us to pass them under the boat.
As she lifted, the patches of keel and hull resting on the supports were exposed. The crane paused for a couple of minutes so we could roll antifouling onto them.
A small club crane stepped the mast directly into its heel fitting on the boat. It was straightforward: untangle the shrouds, lift and move the mast into position, then fasten the rigging all round while the crane held it.
Once in our marina berth, we bent on the sails. The owner treated everyone who’d helped to beer and local fish rolls, Fischbrötchen.
