Sessions two to five were straightforward sailing practice. The ten of us — six men and four women — were split into two groups of five, each with an instructor on a Beneteau Platu 25. We stayed in those groups for the rest of the course. We bent on the sails, cast off, changed roles, found the wind, hoisted and lowered the spinnaker, and berthed back at the pontoons. On the first outing, the instructor supervised everything we did. By the last, everyone knew their job, and we were being shown racing tricks: how to blanket an opponent and spot gusts approaching. Half the sessions fell in hot weather, so we practised man overboard several times: someone jumped into the reservoir, and the rest of us approached the ‘casualty’ from windward to pick them up.
