4 November 2022, noon: the joining instructions listed several phone numbers.

4 November 2022, noon. The joining instructions listed several phone numbers. On arrival, I called our instructor Aubrey. He said he’d be there by six. The second number belonged to Yura Fadeyev, the school’s founder. He was aboard Night Owl with a berthing course and suggested waiting in the café.

All in all, the day was a bit of a waste. No lessons. We arrived, got acquainted over fish and chips in the bar, moved onto the yacht, and carried on chatting over tea. Some of the group were staying on after the berthing course; the others arrived by 7pm. Five of us in total: me from Germany, Slava from the US, Rita from Dubai, Lyosha from London, and Danila from France.

Yura said we would be his school’s final group. He’d already sold 15 yachts from the fleet; only Night Owl remained. Times were changing: Covid restrictions, visa and banking sanctions, pro-Kremlin attitudes among many students… The school’s 15-year story, which began when he bought his first yacht, was coming to an end.

At ten that evening, I wrapped myself in my sleeping bag and fell asleep.
