The passage

On 29 July 2024, I met Grigory, Askold and their friend Sergei again, this time aboard Meerbär. The occasion was the festival’s closing sailing parade. Historic sailing ships and ordinary pleasure boats alike take part.

Boats gather from nine; the parade starts at eleven. They then head towards the mouth of Kiel Fjord at about four knots, many using engines to maintain the pace. Around one or two, they turn at the fjord entrance and head back, continuing until five.

Crowds lined the shore, every patch with a sea view occupied. From land, the boats might have seemed only a couple of metres apart. In reality, there was room: almost always about a hundred feet between hulls, enough to manoeuvre.

We joined from Sporthafen Wik. The wind gave us only two or three knots, letting others gradually overtake and giving us a view of the whole parade from inside. We shared sailing and sea stories. Grigory and Askold provided dried-meat sausages, ham and vegetable sandwiches, sparkling water and juice. Hot weather, light wind.

Back in the marina, we kept chatting, successfully tried fitting the Garmin Nexus instruments that would stay aboard Meerbär, bought groceries and walked the waterfront. Germany were playing Denmark that evening, and the streets were packed.

Twelve miles. Track here.
