After a few course changes and a couple of turns, a fender went into the water. Man overboard. I bore away, tacked, and… lost sight of it. I kept the tiller over to bear away, forgetting about the wind. I crossed through the wind and gybed accidentally. Only then did I spot the casualty and recover it.
The next instruction was to enter Tikhaya Bay. We headed towards it. Then came a question: ‘Will we get there on this course?’ I could sense a trap, but the destination was straight ahead. I said yes. In fact, we were heading straight for a shoal 50 metres away, while the fairway buoys lay to port. We should have been following those.
Two serious mistakes. To pass, you’re allowed none. We spent the remaining time training.
