03.09.2022.

03.09.2022. #sailingacademy. Orekhovaya Bay. Open 800. Instructor: Pavel Filippov. I’ve come to like arriving at training with a particular technique to work on. This time, I had two requests.

Pavel was a stickler. He’d been scrubbing the hull since early morning and made me wash every speck of dust off my Crocs until not a trace of dirt remained.

My first request was to heave to with the jib backed to windward. Surprisingly, I was the first person to ask him to demonstrate it. Every crew member tried twice. Exactly what I’d hoped for: that lovely feeling of being rooted to the spot, without rolling.

Then we ‘recovered the casualty’ several times. Pavel insisted that the fender be brought aboard on the windward side.

My second request was gennaker handling, and I got plenty of that. While we tacked upwind, I led the lines and rigged the sail from its bag. I hoisted and lowered it and handled the bowsprit on my own.

In the end, we carried on almost an hour longer than scheduled.
