14 August 2022.

14 August 2022. Day two of the Federation Cup. Igor’s injury delayed him by half an hour. The crew had changed: only the skipper and I remained from yesterday. Another briefing, another allocation of jobs. Then we patched the spinnaker and took Dmitry Samoilov in tow. We were late for the start.

Three races, two laps each. We missed the first, though we did one lap for ourselves. It was all a blur for me: haul the sail bag out of the saloon, secure it to the guardwires, lead the halyard and guys, attach the topping lift and downhaul to the pole, fit the guy to the pole and the pole to the mast, catch the other end of the guy coming from the cockpit, hold the pole and work the sail, let the guy go, take down the pole, secure the ends to the rail, run down to the saloon to repack the sail, and back onto the foredeck with the bag.

After racing, while the others swam and set out cold cuts, salo, boiled eggs, pancakes, bread, flatbreads, cucumbers and nuts, I just lay on the side deck, stared at the sky and tried to catch my breath. A good day’s racing.
