Once again, none of the others had practical experience. On hearing this, the instructor put me at the helm and the others on the mainsail, jib and gennaker.
Diana said very little. None of the usual talk about the speed log, sails or trim. At times, we were sailing off the wind with the jib sheeted hard in. I had to ask the others to ease it.
Nobody changed position in four hours. In one sense, that’s good: you can refine a skill. But the crew quickly lost interest. The only entertainment was scraping weed off the keel with a mop when the boat stopped answering the tiller.
There were three races. In the first, I had a comfortable lead but touched a buoy and had to take a penalty turn. In the second, I had a poor start. In the third, I couldn’t quite get past the leading boat. Result: third place.
