1 August 2022: my second Laser session in Strogino. Changing into a hired wetsuit, I remembered something Sergei from Kamchatka had told me on our IYT course in September. A wetsuit holds a thin layer of water, which your body warms and keeps warm. So the most important rule is not to piss in it, unless you want that layer to be something other than water from the lake. Naturally, I needed the loo.
Rigging the boat, I realised I was scared. Scared of capsizing again and endlessly hauling myself back into that tiny boat. Only the light breeze was reassuring. Before launching, my instructor Alexei rehearsed turns with me and showed me how to sit properly.
The session itself was great. I held a course confidently, tacked and gybed. Towards the end, I sailed figures of eight between two flags. Perfect weather.
After two hours, once I was standing on solid ground, the exhaustion hit. My neck ached and my arms shook. Taking the mast apart was a real effort. But a sip of hot coffee felt like a sip of life itself.
