How Grigory and I removed the stuck dipstick

For the last two weeks, I’ve been looking for ways to solve the problem with the dipstick. On the advice of @Kirill_Yuzhakov I attached a mooring line with an eye splice. I tried hanging and bouncing on it, then leading it to a winch and winding until it slipped.

After a comment from @sparkgen, I ordered an inspection camera on Amazon. There are two types: a 4mm single-camera version and an 8mm version with a second camera facing sideways. €25–50. I could see the dipstick wasn’t trapped as @FinderOnline had warned it might be, but the shaft had twisted it into a double spiral, like a dough hook. The first bend was over 90 degrees.

A friend of my father said it had happened nearly ten times on his engine. But beneath his dipstick was a removable threaded fitting that widened the opening. My Nanni N2.14 has no such fitting.

I contacted @AlexMemfis. He called with the same advice as @evgen_ru79 — pull or twist the dipstick against the direction of the first bend, applying force to straighten it. He also said to check it was intact afterwards: even a tiny fragment left inside could mean an engine rebuild. One option was to flush the sump with oil.

Someone in the Sailing Club chat wrote a guide to lifting the engine with a hoist or jack supported by the boom. They explained it was fairly standard work and useful to learn yourself. The key was to record every step.

Unexpectedly, Grigory from the yacht Meerbär got in touch. He has over ten years’ experience as an owner. Despite recent surgery, he offered to help, with several extraction plans prepared and a very determined attitude. On Saturday, we went to Rassvet with three toolboxes.

The very first plan worked. Grigory clamped the dipstick and levered it up with a pry bar, using the mounting bolts as a fulcrum. The right angle, roughly 250kg of force and twenty minutes’ effort pulled it free. With an angle grinder available, we turned it into a plug to avoid the same thing happening to the new dipstick.

Thank you to everyone who responded and helped. I’m very grateful. The sailing season can start on schedule!
