The practical part of my IYT Bareboat Skipper course at Black Sea School began on 14 September 2021. After I paid the deposit, they emailed everything I needed to know, from what clothes to bring to local taxi numbers.
You can leave your bag at the office, and there are cafés with inexpensive set lunches in nearby Victory Park.
At 3.30pm, they gathered us together and split us into two groups: those with experience and those without.
We sat in the cockpit and introduced ourselves: where we were from, what we did, our sailing experience and what we planned to do with the qualification. There were seven of us. Nikolai and I were from the Moscow region; Igor, from the Leningrad region; Alexei and Vyacheslav, from the Saratov region; one Sergei, from Khabarovsk; and the other, from Kamchatka.
Our instructor was Denis Mironov. He appointed a treasurer, first mate and bosun. We paid for lunches and drew up a duty rota covering galley help, filling the water tanks and cleaning the yacht.
Denis showed us how to use the heads, shower and gas cooker. For the evening, he told us to revise the flashcards on the International Code of Signals and yacht rigging.
