During one of the Sila Vetra sessions, I spotted some lovely orange Open 800s with the Sailing Academy club’s logo. I decided to try a session with them in Strogino: 2,500 roubles for two hours. It was 24 July, aboard Wiskey. Joining me were a middle-aged man and his teenage son, who was still at school. It was their first time. Our instructor, Alexander, explained everything calmly and in detail, with a bit of humour, and helped us hoist and lower the gennaker. I remembered his advice on the tiller: ‘To head up, move the tiller towards the mainsail; to bear away, move it away.’ He also showed us the right helming position, how to change sides, and how to use your head to feel the wind direction: on your nose means head to wind; cheeks, close-hauled; ears, a beam reach; neck, a broad reach; back of your head, a run. Better than the wet finger I’d seen in films. So if you’d like to go sailing in Moscow, you don’t necessarily need to sign up for a course.
