Buying a yacht

Disappointed by the Marieholm 32, I decided to view a couple of promising boats closer to home. On 22 April 2023, near the Hamburg school where I’d taken my SBF exams, a Marieholm 28 was waiting. Price: €14,500.

Her designer later moved to Hallberg-Rassy and designed their 29-footer. You could feel it everywhere: in the galley, aft cabin and saloon. The gelcoat was excellent, the best I’d seen so far. Something about her reminded me of the HR Monsun on my favourite channel, https://youtube.com/@Pandorak

The lockers were almost empty, with two or three tiers of wooden shelves neatly holding mooring lines, chemicals and tools. The batteries were in there too. Every cabin had a socket with USB ports and a 12V car-type outlet. An electric anchor windlass at the bow had a remote control led back to the wheel.

The owner was refitting her. The steering system was dismantled. He planned to strip the paint back, prime and repaint. For some reason, sealant was plastered liberally round the rudder stock. Besides the depth sounder, there was a fishfinder whose transducer he wanted to point forward to spot shoals earlier. I doubted it would work that way.

The original engine was 50 years old, but the owner had rebuilt it with his mechanic father. To start from cold, you had to lift the cockpit sole, move a lever on top of the engine, turn the ignition key, let it wheeze for five seconds, then — still holding the key in the start position — push the lever back with your foot. The engine then started instantly. It ran steadily, with blue-grey smoke and no strange noises.

My impressions were very positive. The owner volunteered all the explanations and demonstrations. After six hours, I looked at my checklist and realised I had nothing left to ask. The yacht seemed well cared for. I could see no reason not to buy her, and believed Alexei would approve.
