Deerberg Amethyst 27. Good-looking, encapsulated keel, separate heads. Drawbacks: old engine, low headroom, so narrow you could only move sideways, no galley, and rust on the rudder. I wasn’t convinced she was 27 feet. Inside, she reminded me of the Dufour 24 I’d raced in Moscow.
The Haff 35 impressed me both outside and in. The owner’s grandfather had moulded her himself using a hired mould. A large galley and chart table, with a separate, spacious heads compartment. Wood, GRP and metal all in good condition. Drawbacks: old engine, no electrics apart from an old starter battery, a sewage smell, and my doubts about berthing a yacht that size single-handed.
Back home, I realised I wanted something around 29–32 feet — and that I couldn’t carry out a survey on my own.
