Continuing the start of my sailing season, this time on keelboats: https://youtu.be/tF6d_ME5PCo. On Sunday, I went to #sailingacademy for a combined training session and #racing in Strogino.
Our crew was instructor Anton, Yulia on her second outing, Bradley from New Zealand, and Damien from Switzerland, both of whom spoke little Russian. A colourful mix, and all the more interesting for it.
No wind. Blazing heat. The bay was full of lurid green weed. I certainly know how to pick my weather: a Laser ILCA 7 in a blow and a keelboat, the MX700, in a flat calm 😀 Even so, we ran aground twice and heeled the boat to get off. I was delighted: my first grounding, and twice in an hour.
The regatta consisted of four laps, with two yachts competing. We changed roles each lap. As the most experienced, I started at the helm and overtook our rivals to take first place. Then I worked the mainsheet, jib sheets and gennaker, but they beat us every time. Still, that didn’t stop us taking a podium finish: second place!
Afterwards, the instructor came over and praised my work in every position ☺️
