On 20 October, a storm swept across northern Germany. Easterly wind, Beaufort force 10. Three- to four-metre waves and a two-metre rise in water level. The Baltic normally has only 10–20cm of tide, so it’s treated as non-tidal. The infrastructure isn’t designed for this: most defences went underwater and could no longer stop the waves.
I still had Covid that day, so a trip to Lübeck was out of the question. Back at work on Monday, I was immediately surrounded by sympathetic colleagues. Apparently, several dozen boats had sunk in Kiel. @Grotolaz wrote about it on his blog: https://t.me/morskoymedved/846 and https://t.me/morskoymedved/856. Here’s a video from my insurer: https://youtu.be/eZLX1PPq5MU
The silence from the marina made it worse, as they normally send an update after storms. Only on Wednesday did they write: they’d contacted everyone whose yacht was visibly damaged; the rest should inspect their boats themselves. Attached was a video of their battle with the elements: https://youtu.be/i18BLk-DF2k. Look at the height of the mooring piles — normally they come up to head height.
I went straight to Lübeck at the weekend. Thankfully, my yacht escaped with a fender mark on the hull, ten litres of bilge water through a poorly closed hatch, and chafed mooring lines. There are advantages to a river berth.
