8 July 2023.

On 8 July 2023, Masha and I decided on our first outing by ourselves. It would also be my first time anchoring Rassvet. As the anchor lives in a bucket in the stern locker, I’d even asked Alexei how best to go about it.

Anchoring was straightforward. I lowered the anchor over the side by hand, and recovered it the same way. I paid out about five times the depth and secured the warp to the bow cleat. We set up the table, ate McDonald’s burgers, then went forward to relax in the refreshing breeze. The wind hid the sun’s effect; only that evening did we discover we’d burnt.

The table was awkward to set up: bulky, blocking the tiller, and difficult to fit into two moving slots.

Everything would have been idyllic, but for one thing. As soon as I left the marina for open water and opened the throttle, our speed stopped at 2.1 knots. I pushed the engine control all the way forward, but the engine took no notice. That didn’t bode well.
