On 9 June, Masha and I went down to Kiel’s waterfront. The Ocean Race 2023 yachts were coming into the bay. Their last visit had been in 2001, so we didn’t want to miss the chance.
The Ocean Race is a race held since 1973, one of the world’s three biggest sporting events alongside the Olympics and America’s Cup. Previously called the Whitbread Round the World Race (1973–2001) and Volvo Ocean Race (2001–2019), it takes place every three or four years.
In 2023, the crews started in Alicante, Spain, on 15 January, sailed to Cape Verde off West Africa, then Cape Town, South Africa. They crossed the Indian, Southern and Pacific Oceans to Itajaí, Brazil; headed north to Newport, Rhode Island, in the US; crossed the Atlantic to Aarhus, Denmark; rounded a buoy in Kiel, Germany; reached The Hague, Netherlands; and finished in Genoa, Italy, on 29 June. A total of 32,000 nautical miles, or 60,000km.
Two boats collided on the final leg on 15 June. Even so, the favourites, the US 11th Hour Racing Team, took first place. They’re the ones in my photographs.
The next start has been announced for 2025–2026.
