Let’s begin with silent films, with no unnecessary words, just a contemplative, inspiring immersion in the atmosphere:
• Pandorak — a French sailor’s channel. Only two videos, but I watch them countless times. They recharge me whenever I forget why I’m doing all this.
• TUPAIA — this French couple’s early videos recall Pandorak: beautiful North Sea passages and warm, heartfelt scenes full of smiles. They’ve now headed for the Drake Passage.
• Guirec Soudée — especially his video of wintering in Greenland with… a hen aboard! An interesting skipper generally, now battling storms in the Vendée Globe.
• Timelab Pro — masters of FPV filming. Don’t miss Greenland and Franz Josef Land. Images approaching art.
• patrick lombardi — a beautiful, inspiring FPV drone video filmed from a sailing boat.
• Harmen Hoek — no sailing, but the same harmony with nature. Hiking in the wildest, most remote corners of the planet.
Russian-language channels:
• Antares — enthusiasts from Khabarovsk built an inflatable sailing catamaran and made three expeditions: to Vladivostok, Iony Island in the Sea of Okhotsk, and Chukotka. Beautifully filmed, with heart.
• Krugosvetchiki — two 35-year-old Muscovites bought a yacht on credit and set off round the world, hoping video-making would pay for her. It didn’t. After dozens of excellent episodes, their exhaustion and fraying patience with each other show. But the early videos are excellent. Last week, they celebrated three years of travelling, having reached New Zealand.
• Stas Tolstnev — a lovely account of a videographer father and his son travelling round Baikal on a motorised inflatable catamaran. Spectacular and atmospheric.
• Sergey Krotov — skipper and charter agent, with excellent films of one- and two-week charter itineraries. A pleasure to listen to.
• Captain German — from Odesa, with several circumnavigations aboard Mushu. Good stories to have on in the background during routine jobs.
Educational channels in Russian:
• Gleb Semerenko — IYT instructor and founder of Sailing Time. Possibly the best, most substantial sailing lessons on Russian-language YouTube. Rewatching his reefing lesson this summer finally made it click for me.
• Sailing lessons at Black Sea School — Black Sea School’s channel. Their material led me to go there to study in 2021. A rigorous, very informative approach.
Probably the best channels for Russian-speaking viewers. Next time, English-language ones. What inspires you? I’d be grateful for recommendations.
